Julio Diaz-Carroll, academic advisor, and Maria Perez, associate director of undergraduate student success, in the College of Public Health (CPH) Office of Student Affairs have been honored as part of the Top 10 Advisors in this year’s 2025 Academic Advisor Awards. Winners are chosen based on student nominations submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Advising describing the highly impactful role advisors have had in making their George Mason experience positive and their display of care and value for their students.

“What sets Julio apart is his dedication to each student's success. He takes the time to understand individual goals and challenges, offering tailored advice and encouragement. His mentorship has not only boosted my confidence but has also inspired me to push beyond my limits and strive for excellence. Whether it’s through detailed feedback, career insights, or simply being a great listener, Julio consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to student success,” said a student about Diaz in his nomination.

About Perez, a student said, “one of Maria’s greatest strengths is her ability to communicate complex information in a way that is easy to understand. She encourages students to reach out, fostering an environment where we feel comfortable seeking assistance. Beyond simply answering questions, she actively engages with students, ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to succeed. Her deep knowledge of George Mason’s regulations and procedures has been instrumental in helping us transition smoothly into the university system.”

Academic advisors are vital in facilitating student education and development, counseling graduate and undergraduate students through all aspects of their time at George Mason by providing resources and support such as guiding students through course registration. CPH advisors help students navigate their journey from the transition from high school to university through graduation, assisting them in achieving their academic, personal, and professional goals.

“I feel very rewarded during our graduation ceremonies. Seeing students walking across that stage and completing a very difficult program is the most satisfying feeling in my professional career. Knowing that I had a small part in their student success makes all the work I do as an advisor worth it,” said Diaz-Carroll.

“While I’m honored by the award, it’s the idea behind the recognition that matters most to me – the fact that I made a difference or added something positive for our students that may have played some part toward their journey from start to finish,” said Perez

Awardees were recognized at the Mason Advising Symposium May 22 in Dewberry Hall. Congratulations to all the winners!
