College of Public Health Department of Health Administration and Policy faculty, Professor John Cantiello and Associate Professor Brenda Helen Sheingold have been recognized for teaching excellence by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). AUPHA Teaching Excellence Awards honor faculty who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments as educators and whose practice inspires fellow AUPHA members.

Cantiello received the Teaching Excellence Award for Healthcare Management and Leadership. This award is sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and recognizes an individual’s dedication to teaching at the undergraduate, masters, or doctoral level, and whose work advances the various disciplines within health administration. 

Sheingold received the Quint Studer Gratitude Prize for Teaching Excellence. The Quint Studer Gratitude Prize winner represents outstanding teaching and mentoring, leadership in educational programming, and dissemination of innovative and promising practices for teaching and mentoring, and course and curriculum development.

About the awardees 

Cantiello teaches health care quality improvement courses across the graduate and undergraduate levels and serves as coordinator of the Online Undergraduate Program in Health Administration. Cantiello was named a Fellow of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 2024 and was one of 21 recipients worldwide to earn a spot in the IHI fellowship program. Cantiello has previously been recognized for teaching excellence by the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning. 

Sheingold is the Division Director for the Healthcare Administration Programs at the Department of Health Administration and Policy. Sheingold was named twice as a University of Oxford Scholar-in-Residence to study interdisciplinary curriculum development on contemporary antisemitism. During her time as Program and Division Director, George Mason’s MHA program has won multiple nationally competitive awards from the Commission on the Accreditation of Health Administration Education (CAHME). 

Cantiello and Sheingold will be recognized at the AUPHA Annual Meeting alongside other Teaching Excellence Awards winners. Congratulations!
