Study Leave for Tenured Instructional Faculty

Study Leave for Tenured Instructional Faculty, funded by the Provost, is intended to provide paid temporary leave for the support of advancing scholarly research, teaching, and/or creative activity, including the development of innovative teaching approaches and methods. The college encourages its full-time, tenured faculty with six or more years of service to George Mason University to pursue this opportunity.  

Leave may be taken during the Fall or Spring semester of the academic year following the announcement of the award.  Leave may be taken for one semester at full pay or two semesters at half pay. The leave schedule must be approved by the department chair and Dean. 

Applications for study leave for Fall or Spring semesters of an academic year must be submitted to Cathy Tompkins, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, ctompkin@gmu.edu in the fall semester of the preceding academic year. Applications for leave to be taken in AY 2024-25 academic year are due on Friday, October 27, 2023.

  Conditions of the Award 

  • A faculty member who receives a study leave must agree to remain a full-time employee of the University for at least one academic year after the conclusion of the leave. 
  • At the completion of the study leave, faculty must submit a study leave report that describes the accomplishments made possible by the faculty study leave, as well as any continuing plans related to the scholarly work. The report should be emailed to Cathy Tompkins no later than August 1st, immediately following the leave period.

The College supports up to two study leaves for CPH tenured instructional faculty per academic year.
