Public health is the backbone of our health care system and plays an essential role in ensuring the health of our community. People often take for granted how public health ensures that the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat are safe. When public health breaks down, it is often our most vulnerable—the elderly, children, immunocompromised, and the poor—that are disproportionately affected. Public health goes beyond the absence of disease by focusing on how factors such as where we live, work, and play are essential to a healthy population.
As we are building toward the first school of public health in the Commonwealth of Virginia, your gift can help ensure that the public health resources are available to government and nongovernmental agencies in ensuring that health gains in our communities are shared by all. Our top priorities are:
- Endowed professorships that will bring additional research to the department
- Student scholarships that will support undergraduate and graduate students as they complete their studies
- A speaker series to bring world renowned experts and other programming to Mason
